🌏 COMMON GST/HST/VAT RATES QUICK REFERENCE

Country/Region Tax Name Standard Rate
🇮🇳 India GST 5%, 12%, 18%, 28%
🇦🇺 Australia GST 10%
🇳🇿 New Zealand GST 15%
🇨🇦 Canada GST/HST 5% (Federal) + Provincial
🇸🇬 Singapore GST 9% (as of 2024)
🇬🇧 United Kingdom VAT 20%
🇲🇾 Malaysia SST 6% (Service), 10% (Sales)
🇪🇺 European Union VAT 17-27% (varies by country)

🔑 KEY: Always confirm your country's current rate. GST rates can change with government budgets.

⚙️ THREE ESSENTIAL CALCULATION MODES

🔵 MODE 1: ADD GST (Net → Gross)

You know your base price. What's the tax-inclusive selling price?

NET PRICE $500.00
  ─────────────────────────▶
GST RATE 18%
  ─────────────────────────▶
                    RESULT:
                    🧾 GST Amount: $90.00
                    💲 Gross Price: $590.00

🧠 Formula:
Gross = Net × (1 + GST%/100)
GST Amount = Net × (GST%/100)

🟢 MODE 2: EXTRACT GST (Gross → Net)

The total bill is $1,180 including 18% GST. What's the base price and tax?

GROSS PRICE $1,180.00
  ─────────────────────────▶
GST RATE 18%
  ─────────────────────────▶
                    RESULT:
                    📦 Net Price: $1,000.00
                    🧾 GST Amount: $180.00

🧠 Formula:
Net = Gross / (1 + GST%/100)
GST Amount = Gross - Net

⚠️ COMMON MISTAKE: To remove 18% GST, you do NOT multiply the gross by 0.82. You must divide by 1.18. Multiplying by 0.82 undercalculates the net price.

🟡 MODE 3: FIND GST AMOUNT ONLY

Quick check: How much tax is in this $2,360 invoice at 18%?

GROSS PRICE $2,360.00
  ─────────────────────────▶
GST RATE 18%
  ─────────────────────────▶
                    RESULT:
                    🧾 GST Amount: $360.00

🧮 THE DEADLY GST MISTAKE

Why You Can't Just Subtract the Percentage

Scenario: Remove 18% GST from a $1,180 item

❌ WRONG WAY:
   $1,180 × 0.18 = $212.40 (GST?)
   $1,180 - $212.40 = $967.60 (Net?)
   → Off by $32.40!

✅ RIGHT WAY:
   $1,180 ÷ 1.18 = $1,000.00 (Net)
   $1,180 - $1,000 = $180.00 (GST)
   → Spot on.

│ │
│ To ADD GST: Net × (1 + Rate) = Gross │
│ To REMOVE GST: Gross ÷ (1 + Rate) = Net │
│ │
│ Never multiply the gross by the decimal rate to │
│ find the GST amount inside a tax-inclusive price. │

💡 YOU ONLY REMIT THE DIFFERENCE. GST is not a cost to your business (if registered). It flows through you from customer to government.

🛒 B2B vs. B2C PRICING STRATEGY

When to Show GST-Exclusive vs. GST-Inclusive

Business Type Display Price Why
B2C (Retail, E-com) GST-Inclusive Consumers want to know the final price they pay
B2B (Wholesale, Services) GST-Exclusive Businesses claim Input Tax Credits; they care about the net cost
Quotes & Proposals GST-Exclusive + "GST Extra" Professional expectation; tax is shown as a separate line item
Invoices Both (Net, GST, Total) Legal requirement in most jurisdictions for registered entities

✅ GST COMPLIANCE CHECKLIST

For Registered Businesses:

  • Are my tax invoices GST-compliant? (GSTIN, HSN/SAC codes, place of supply, taxable value, tax amount clearly stated.)

  • Am I filing returns on time? (GSTR-1 for outward supplies, GSTR-3B for summary return and payment, monthly or quarterly.)

  • Am I reconciling Input Tax Credit? (Match your purchase invoices with GSTR-2B to ensure you claim only eligible ITC.)

  • Do I issue a proper GST invoice within 30 days of supply?

  • Am I charging the correct GST rate for my product/service category? (Check the latest HSN/SAC code rate notifications.)

  • For exports: Do I have a valid LUT (Letter of Undertaking) on file to export without paying IGST?

  • Am I correctly handling Reverse Charge Mechanism (RCM) transactions? (Where the recipient pays GST instead of the supplier.)

Enjoy the little things in life. For one day, you may look back and realize they were the big things. Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.
